Unseasonal downpour pushes average rainfall in Gujarat to 124%

Ahmedabad: Till Saturday morning, before the current spell of unseasonal rain began in Gujarat, the state had recorded 1,042.90 mm of total average rainfall — 118.26% of the 10-year average. However, as of 6 am on Tuesday, the state has received 1,097.94 mm of rainfall, which is 124.51% of the average — meaning around 55 mm (over 2 inches) of average rainfall has lashed the state in just three days.

According to data from the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC), rainfall was recorded in 219 talukas across the state in the 24 hours ending at 6 am Tuesday, with Rajula in Amreli district receiving the highest — up to 8.5 inches.

Region-wise, Kutch has completed 148.41% of its average seasonal rainfall, followed by South Gujarat at 130.48%. North Gujarat and East-Central Gujarat have received 123.48% and 123.20% respectively, while the Saurashtra region has completed 117.47% of its average rainfall.

Gujarat is among six Indian states that have received more than twice the normal rainfall in October, according to IMD data. Furthermore, by Monday morning, Gujarat had recorded around 43 mm of rainfall this month — more than double the October average of 19 mm, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Data from SEOC shows that between 2015 and 2024, Gujarat’s average October rainfall stood at 27.4 mm, making this year’s total significantly higher. With four days still remaining in the month and more rainfall forecast due to a depression over the Arabian Sea, the figure could rise further.

For Gujarat and India’s western coast, the current depression over the Arabian Sea marks the second major weather system this month, following the deep depression that intensified into Cyclone Shakthi earlier. However, IMD officials said the chances of the present system developing into a cyclone are low. Meanwhile, the Bay of Bengal has already witnessed the formation of Cyclone Montha. DeshGujarat
