Gujarat businessman clears ₹90 lakh debt of entire village in memory of his mother

Amreli: In an act of generosity, a businessman from Amreli district has made his entire village debt-free. Babubhai Jirawala, who hails from Jira village in Savarkundla taluka, cleared the outstanding loans of 290 farmers by donating ₹90 lakh on his mother’s death anniversary.

According to Jirawala, the farmers of Jira village had been burdened by a decades-old loan dispute dating back to 1995. “A major controversy had been raging in our village since 1995 regarding the Jira Seva Sahakari Mandal. The then administrators had taken fraudulent loans in the names of farmers. Over the years, the debt had grown substantially, depriving farmers of access to government schemes, assistance, and new bank loans,” he explained.

Because of the long-pending debt, even land divisions within the village had stalled. Jirawala added, “My mother always wished to sell her jewellery to help repay the farmers’ debts. Fulfilling her dream, my brother and I met with bank officials and expressed our intention to clear the dues. The bank cooperated and issued no-dues certificates to all farmers.”

With Jirawala’s contribution of ₹89.89 lakh, all 290 farmers in Jira village are now officially debt-free — ending a 30-year financial struggle. DeshGujarat
