More than half of Gujarat’s GST comes from Ahmedabad alone

Ahmedabad: More than half of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue collected from Gujarat in a year comes from Ahmedabad alone, highlighting the city’s dominant role in the state’s economy. According to official data, Ahmedabad contributes 52.56 per cent of Gujarat’s total GST collection, amounting to ₹33,722.72 crore.

Based on this, an average of ₹92.39 crore is collected every day from Ahmedabad’s residents and businesses as GST. Among districts with the highest GST collections, Surat ranks second with ₹6,689.51 crore, followed by Vadodara at ₹5,873.69 crore. Surat accounts for nearly 9 per cent of Gujarat’s total GST contribution.

Gujarat’s overall GST revenue has shown a steady and significant rise over the past few years. The state collected ₹45,464.45 crore in GST in 2021–22, which increased to ₹56,064.03 crore in 2022–23 and ₹64,132.24 crore in 2023–24. In the financial year 2024–25, GST collection further rose to ₹73,277.56 crore, reflecting sustained economic activity across sectors.

In terms of state-wise GST collection at the national level for 2024–25, Maharashtra topped the list with ₹3.60 lakh crore, followed by Karnataka at ₹1.60 lakh crore. Gujarat ranked third, ahead of Tamil Nadu and Haryana.

For the current financial year 2025–26, Gujarat has already collected ₹52,390 crore in GST between April and November. During the same period last year, the collection stood at around ₹48,000 crore, indicating year-on-year growth.
