AMC cracks down on PGs running without NOCs, seals three houses

Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has sealed three houses in the Memnagar area for operating as paying guest (PG) accommodation without mandatory permissions. The action was taken against properties in Sterling Society and Neelamani Society near Gurukul Road for failing to comply with regulations under the Gujarat Provincial Municipal Corporations (GPMC) Act.

According to officials, running a PG or hostel in a flat or housing society requires compulsory police verification, a fire safety NOC and, importantly, an NOC from the concerned society. The Estate Department of the AMC had issued two notices to the operators seeking submission of the required documents. As no evidence was produced even after the final three-day notice, the three premises were sealed on January 9.

Civic authorities said the corporation has framed a policy for PG-hostels, under which violators are first given 15 days to submit documents, followed by a final notice of three days. Failure to comply results in sealing of the premises.

Officials also noted that there are over 250 PG-hostels operating across the city, with nearly 200 located in the western zone. Many of these are suspected to be running without proper police verification or society NOCs. While inspections had slowed earlier, enforcement has now resumed in the North West Zone, with further action likely against non-compliant PGs in other parts of the city. DeshGujarat
