AMC forms special task force to curb bird feeding at Sabarmati Riverfront

Ahmedabad: Following complaints about bird feed being thrown in unused sports areas, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has imposed a ban on bird and animal feeding across the Sabarmati Riverfront and its adjoining roads and open areas. The civic body has also formed a 10-member task force to identify and remove such spots and to ensure strict implementation of the ban.

The AMC commissioner has directed the formation of the task force to curb illegal feeding activities on the Riverfront, as there is no dedicated Cattle Nuisance Control Department (CNCD) within the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL).

Officials said the task force has been instructed to enforce a zero-tolerance policy, including taking action against feeders and removing bird and animal feeding spots. The task force will comprise the Deputy General Manager of SRFDCL, five CNCD staff members, and police inspectors from the Riverfront East and West police stations.

While the crackdown has begun at the Sabarmati Riverfront, officials said the ban will be extended across Ahmedabad in a phased manner. Similar restrictions will be imposed at other public places in the city.

The renewed action follows directions issued at the highest level of the civic administration. In July 2024, then AMC commissioner M Thennarasan had instructed officials to identify bird-feeding nuisance spots across roads and public areas in all zones. Deputy municipal commissioners were asked to map such locations and prepare action plans, though no concrete follow-up was taken at the time. DeshGujarat
