January 20, 2026
Ahmedabad: The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Tuesday launched a major demolition drive to remove illegal encroachments around Vanarvat Lake in the Vatva area, aiming to restore the lake’s original water-holding capacity and ensure smooth drainage of rainwater.
AMC, in its press release, said unauthorised encroachments were removed from Town Planning Scheme No. 88 (Vatva–2), Final Plot No. 40, Revenue Survey No. 907, popularly known as Vanarvat Lake, which falls under the jurisdiction of the South Zone of the AMC in Vatva ward.
After completing the required notice procedures, a joint operation was launched by the Estate Department along with the Health Department, Fire Department, UCD Department and Medical Vans, totalling around 300 AMC officials and staff, with support from 400 police personnel. The encroachment removal work commenced at 8:00 am.
The encroached area around the lake was divided into four blocks, and with the help of 10 Hitachi machines and other machinery, approximately 450 temporary and permanent residential and commercial encroachments were removed.
As a result of the operation:
-
About 28,227 square metres of lake land were cleared.
-
An additional 6,658 square metres of reserved Final Plot No. 66, earmarked for garden purposes under the Town Planning Scheme, was reclaimed.
-
Around 190 temporary and permanent encroachments were removed from 18-metre and 24-metre wide Town Planning roads surrounding Vanarvat Lake.
In total, 34,883 square metres of lake and reserved land were reclaimed, and approximately 770 metres of Town Planning road was cleared and made accessible.
Among those affected, around 75 needy displaced families were shifted to Lambha and Narol shelter homes using AMTS buses.
In the coming days, after removal of debris and construction waste from the lake area, lake development works will also be undertaken.
Furthermore, under the Lake Interlinking Project, the proposed connection of Vanarvat Lake, Mahalaxmi Lake and Ropda Lake will help resolve waterlogging issues in low-lying areas and ease traffic congestion through the newly opened roads.
Deputy municipal commissioners and senior civic officials, including assistant municipal commissioners, were present at the site to supervise the operation. DeshGujarat
