SMC plans Rs 12.17 crore Canal Road widening project in Mota Varachha
January 26, 2026
Surat: As part of efforts to strengthen the road network in the city’s border areas, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has decided to widen and develop the Canal Road from Mota Varachha Ranuja Dham Dukhiya No Darbar Road to the DFCC Garnala via Dada Bhagwan Trimandir. A proposal seeking approval for an estimated cost of Rs 12.17 crore has been placed before the Public Works Committee.
The project aims to address the issue of the existing narrow and unpaved road. At present, motorists are forced to take long detours to reach Gothan or Olpad. Once completed, the new road will significantly reduce travel distance, saving both time and fuel.
Under the plan, development work will be carried out on a 5-metre-wide stretch of the 9-metre road space available on both sides of the canal, covering construction from the subgrade to the wearing course. Special layering will also be undertaken to ensure the road can withstand heavy vehicle traffic and remain durable over the long term.
The upgraded road will provide direct connectivity to Mota Varachha and improve access to Dada Bhagwan Trimandir and the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) railway route. Officials said the project is also expected to divert traffic towards the highway, leading to a major reduction in congestion across the area. DeshGujarat
