Ahmedabad: The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Customs Department at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport here intercepted a man and a woman attempting to carry more than $70,000 (approximately ₹63.4 lakh) in cash while travelling abroad.
According to officials, acting on specific intelligence, AIU officers stopped the two passengers, who hail from Valsad, and were departing for Bangkok on March 6. During baggage checks and personal searches, $35,300 and $35,040 were recovered from their trolley bags.
The foreign currency was seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962; FEMA, 1999; and the Foreign Exchange Management (Export and Import of Currency) Regulations, officials said.
This is the second seizure of US currency at SVPI Airport within a month. Earlier, on February 13, a passenger arriving from Dubai was caught with $28,800 concealed in a trolley bag, a carry bag, and his trouser pockets. DeshGujarat
