No Medical University Yet in Gujarat; Rs 2 Crore Allocated but Location Still Not Decided
March 12, 2026
Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government has confirmed that a proposal to establish a State Medical University is under consideration, but as of January 1, 2026, not a single medical university exists in the state. The information was given by the Minister of State for Health in the Assembly in reply to a question raised during the ongoing Budget Session.
The question sought to know whether the state government is planning to set up a medical university and whether it is aware that Gujarat currently does not have even one such university.
In his reply, the minister stated that the government is aware of the situation and that the process to establish a State Medical University is underway. He informed the House that budgetary provisions have already been made for the project in the last two financial years.
According to the reply, a provision of ₹1 crore was made in the 2024–25 budget for construction-related work for the proposed State Medical University. A similar provision of ₹1 crore has also been made in the 2025–26 budget for the same purpose.
However, the government did not specify the location of the proposed university or give any timeline for its completion. DeshGujarat
