March 31, 2026
Amreli: A significant milestone has been achieved in the Khijadiya–Amreli railway broad gauge conversion project, with a successful engine trial conducted on the newly laid track on Monday.
The trial run was carried out between Khijadiya Railway Station and Amreli Railway Station, during which the engine operated at a speed of 40 kmph. Railway officials stated that the remaining work on the project is expected to be completed within the next one to one-and-a-half months. Following this, high-speed trials of up to 100 kmph will be undertaken.
The 17-km Khijadiya–Amreli Gauge Conversion (GC) project was sanctioned in 2023–24 at an estimated cost of ₹178 crore. Upon completion, Amreli will be connected to the Ahmedabad–Surat–Mumbai broad gauge network via Khijadiya and Botad, significantly improving regional rail connectivity.
The successful trial has generated enthusiasm among residents of Amreli and surrounding areas, as regular train services on the route are expected to commence in the near future. DeshGujarat
