The Tata group Chairman Ratan Tata today called on Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Narendra Modi in Gandhinagar.

Tata group’s next Chairman Cyrus Mistry was with Mr. Ratan Tata in this meeting.

The meeting was described as introductory. State information department release said this was a courtesy visit.

“Ratan Tata introduced Cyrus to the chief minister. They expressed interest in the efforts made by Gujarat in energy sector, especially geo-thermal energy. The officials said the group is committed to be a partner in the state’s journey towards progress as well as in development of human resources in the state,” the release said.

Tata Chemicals Limited, Tata Consultancy Services and Tata Motors have their operations in Gujarat, while another group company Tata Power Limited is coming up with a Ultra Mega Power Plant at Mundra in Kutch district.

Shri Ratan Tata started an introductory trip a week ago from Delhi for his successor Cyrus P. Mistry with the first stop being Commerce Minister Anand Sharma and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

On November 23, Tata Sons had announced that Mr. Mistry, a former Managing Director at the Shapoorji Pallonji Group, would be Mr. Ratan Tata’s successor to the head of the over $80-billion conglomerate Tata Group.

The 43-year-old Mistry, son of Pallonji Mistry, Chairman of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group which holds 18 per cent stake in Tata Sons, will take over the reins when Mr. Tata retires in December, 2012.

Mr. Tata would hang his boots in December, 2012, when he turns 75 — the retirement age fixed by the group that has presence in businesses ranging from salt to software. Tata Sons had constituted a five-member committee in August last year to scout for a successor to Mr. Tata.
