Ahmedabad, DeshGujarat

Sources say, Gujarat Government and Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd(RVNL) will sign a Memorandum of Understanding(MOU) for the Ahmedabad Regional Rail Project.

Ahmedbad Regional Rail System project is to connect periphery towns and villages with Ahmedabad through a dedicated rail network. It’s another ambitious project like Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro rail project which is lingering since last one decade.

Direct association of the RVNL with the project to connect towns around Ahmedabad, covering 288 kilometers will give major boost to the project. RVNL is a 100% subsidiary of ministry of railways. RVNL and the Government of Gujarat will soon launch a joint venture company through SPV(special purpose vehicle).

The earlier cost of the regional rail project was around Rs 5,000 crore which was supposed to network Ahmedabad with Sanand and go right up to Anand near Vadodara.

The estimated cost as per the first Detailed Project Report (DPR) in 2005 was Rs 2,500 crore.

Regional Rail System (RRS) for Ahmedabad was an outcome of the IPTS study for Ahmedabad city to identify the solutions for urban transport problem in the city. The DPR for the Regional Rail System for Ahmedabad was initiated in 2003 through Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and RITES. The objective was to give incentives to people to stay in satellite townships of Ahmedabad by ensuring that they reach their work places using a suburban rail-based transport system.
