The problem, farmers of Deesa belt in north Gujarat are facing these days is about shortage of cold storage.
For last some days, long queues of vehicles carrying stock of potatoes can be seen on roads connecting to various cold storage.
While total capacity of all cold storages together in this belt is 1.80 crore bags, the production total is around 2.40 crore bags.
Due to bumper production, price has gone down to Rs. 70/ 20 kg.
While on one hand, many cold storage have already conveyed farmers that they have no further space available, on the other hand uprooting of potatoes is still going on in farms, which indicates prices may go further down.
The lowest price of potatoes was in year 2008 which was Rs.40 per 20 Kg. Similar situation was experienced in year 2011 also.
