Solar Impulse to halt for five days in Gujarat

Civil Aviation Minister of Gujarat Shri Saurabh Patel today informed media persons that the first solar aircraft on world journey will halt in Gujarat for five days.

Patel said that the Gujarat government is officially going to host the aircraft and its team to encourage the use of green energy, clean energy and solar energy. He said Gujarat government’s efforts in this direction will get further boost through five days long halt of this plane here.

He said, the plane will arrive at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel international airport on Tuesday evening. During its stay in Gujarat, various awareness programmes like conference, visit of school children and information exchange will take place.

Solar Impulse-2 from Switzerland is one-seater plane that works entirely on solar energy, by using 4 lithium batteries and 17,000 solar cells on its wing that are as wide as the wings of Boeing 747. This plane can fly day and night. Polymer used in this plane has been made in Panoli plant of a company in central Gujarat’s Bharuch.

Patel pointed out that 83 years back when Tata Sons started India’s first commercial air service between Karachi and Mumbai, the first plane landed at Ahmedabad airport in year 1932. Today, after 83 years, world’s first solar power run plane will be welcomed in Gujarat.
