Lower promenade plantation at Sabarmati riverfront has partially damaged, due to sudden surge in the water level of the river that flows in the midst of Ahmedabad late last night, which has also flooded some low lying areas, official sources of the city municipal corporation (AMC) said today.

‘At least two lac cu secs of water was released from three sources in the river late last night which caused the surge in the water level. Dharoi dam contributed, a maximum of around 1.67 lac cu secs while remaining water came from the Narmada main canal and Lakroda check dam. The water level in the river reached 135 meter near vasna just two meters below danger mark,’ Mr I K Patel, Dy Commissioner AMC said.

‘Owing to this the water came inside the riverfront being constructed along the banks and also the three low lying ares of Chandrabhaga, Shankar Bhuvan and Fatehvadi. Some of the trees and other plantations in the riverfront have been destroyed. The actual assessment would be done once the water completely recedes most likely by this evening,’ He said.

The AMC Dy Commissioner also said that water in all the three low lying areas would completely recede by 7 to 8 O’clock in the evening as the water levels were going down in the river. It is close to 131 meter currently.

Riverfront is the place where Mr. Modi and the visiting Chinese premier Xi Jinping had the historic ‘walk the talk’ and dined together.
