Personal Life

Born on 4th Feb, 1956 in Takia Village, Sasaram District, Rohtas, Bihar; and my parents, Late Ram Chandan Paswan and Late Laxmina Devi were my ispiration right from childhood. I was married to Premkali Devi on 1st June, 1972.

Student Life

I completed my primary, secondary and higher secondary education from Shankar High School and graduated from B. N. College, (Patna University).

Sports and athletics were my main interests during college days, and I actively participated in different sport events. In 1973, I participated in all competitions of Bihar State Athletics Meet, organized in Vetenary College, Patna and in 1975 participated in Hyderabad’s All India Sports Competition.

In Jaipur, All India Level competition was organized and because of casteism, I was not allowed to be a part of it. This incident was a turning point in my life. I realized, just because of casteism a talented person loses opportunities.

In 1975, Jai Prakash Narayan started his famous J. P. Andolan. I actively participated in it. During the movement, a state of emergency was declared which resulted in massive public protest. In the same year, ‘Athlete Meet’ was organized in Patna University and I participated and became The Athlete Champion.

Political Life

Recognizing my political talent, Karpuri Thakur inspired me to join politics in 1980 and I stood in assembly elections, but lost by a mere margin of two and a half thousand votes. But still I continued my social services and in 1985 became ‘MLA’ after winning Chenari assembly seat in Assembly Elections.

Majority of votes were from Dalits but it’s sad to say that at that time their condition was miserable. Dalit empowerment became my main motive. I provided clothes to party-workers and education to villagers about how they can improve their living standard. Higher castes were dominant in the society. I fought for Dalit rights and worked on the upliftment of people who were living below poverty line. Establishment of Eklavya Sangh was one of my remarkable step towards Dalit empowerment.

In 1987, I was elected as the General Secretary of Yuva Lok Dal and completed my term in 1989.

After the death of Jagjeevan Ram in 1989, I got ticket from Sasaram Lok Sabha constituency and got elected as the Member of Parliament by defeating Meera Kumar by a margin of 113,000 votes.

In general elections of 1991, I got elected as the Member of Parliament from the same seat and during my tenure starting from 1991 to 1996, worked for development of my constituency.

In 2000, was again elected as MLA and became the Weight-Measurement and Horticulture Minister. However, resigned from ministerial duties in the year 2004.

Got elected from Mohaniya in 2005 and in April 2008 became the Building Construction Minister of Govt. of Bihar.

As Building Construction Minister, I improved the work-culture of the department and ensured to get the pending and on-going projects finished within the offered time-frame.

“Chhedi Paswan is known as ‘The Messiah of Dalits’. Not with the ambitious mood but with his inner urge to mainstream down trodden section of the society.”
