Mohammad Kaif appointed assistant coach of Gujarat Lions
February 16, 2017
Rajkot: Indian Premier League franchise Gujarat Lions has today appointed Mohammad Kaif as the new assistant coach of the team. Kaif has no prior experience in coaching but he did play the role of captain and mentor for Chhattisgarh in the Ranji Trophy this season. Kaif will team up with head Gujarat Luons coach Brad Hodge, who came on board last year, for the tenth edition of the league, the Lions confirmed on Twitter.
Kaif had a difficult time in the IPL as a player scoring just 259 runs in 29 matches spanning four seasons. But his luck could change as a coach as he embarks on a new journey with the Lions team which is led by India batsman Suresh Raina. The 36-year-old has played 13 Tests and 125 one-day internationals for India. He was a part of the victorious Rajasthan Royals team in the inaugural season in 2008 and subsequently went on to play for Kings XI Punjab and Royal Challengers Bangalore.
The Lions’ campaign in their debut season last year came to an end in the second qualifier where they lost to eventual champions Sunrisers Hyderabad by 4 wickets. They had finished on top of the points table in the league stage with nine wins and five losses from 14 matches.
