Gujarat govt given 4 weeks to respond to PIL on use of Gujarati in court proceedings
June 22, 2023
Ahmedabad: The Gujarat high court has been given a four-week extension to the state government to respond to a public interest litigation (PIL) that calls for the use of Gujarati, along with English, in high court proceedings. The court has asked the government’s lawyer to provide a response by July 21.
The PIL requests the state government and the central government to allow the use of Gujarati, citing the authorization given by the Gujarat governor in 2012. The petitioner’s advocate, Asim Pandya, argued that the government should clarify its position on the governor’s recommendation made in 2012, as it has remained ambiguous since the PIL was filed in November 2022.
The PIL seeks directions from the high court for the implementation of the governor’s authorization, which permits the use of Gujarati alongside English in court hearings. The PIL also questions the Supreme Court’s decision to reject the proposals to allow the use of Gujarati in the high court and similar suggestions for regional languages in Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, and Karnataka.
