Gujarat govt opposes discharge plea of Teesta Setalvad in false evidence case

Ahmedabad: The state government of Gujarat has opposed social activist Teesta Setalvad’s application for discharge in a case related to the alleged fabrication of evidence in the 2002 post-Godhra riot cases.

During a hearing in a sessions court on Monday, the government argued that Setalvad had betrayed the trust of the riot victims and provided enough evidence to establish her guilt.

“There is sufficient evidence and reasons to file a chargesheet against the accused. For the reasons mentioned above and taking into account the reasons and submissions to be presented during the argument, the court is requested to reject the discharge plea of the accused,” the government’s affidavit said.

Setalvad was arrested in June of the previous year, along with former DGP R.B. Sreekumar and ex-IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt, in a case registered by the Ahmedabad crime branch after the Supreme Court dismissed Zakia Jafri’s appeal challenging the Special Investigation Team’s clearance of Modi and 62 others in the 2002 riot cases. The Gujarat High Court recently denied her request for regular bail, ordering her to surrender, though the Supreme Court granted her a week’s time to do so. DeshGujarat
