Low-pressure area in Arabian Sea might turn into cyclone ‘Tej’: IMD

Gandhinagar: Some weather forecast models suggest that a low-pressure area in the Arabian Sea might turn into a severe cyclonic storm, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday. However, there in no worming for the Northern Arabian sea in which the Gujarat coast fall so far.

Under the influence of the cyclonic circulation over the Southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Lakshadweep area, a low-pressure area has formed over the Southeast and adjoining East central Arabian Sea. It is likely to move west-northwestwards and become a well-marked low-pressure area over the East central and adjoining Southeast Arabian Sea during the next 24 hours and intensify into a depression over the Central Arabian Sea around October 21st, reported the IMD on Monday.

“ECMWF (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts) is indicating crossing over Oman-Yemen coasts, and NCEP GFS is indicating crossing over Pakistan-Saurashtra coasts. IMD GFS and NCUM are indicating no significant intensification of this system,” stated the IMD statement.

If this system gains strength, it would mark the first post-monsoon cyclone in the Arabian Sea. The officials have not determined the potential strength of the cyclone, and the IMD has stated that they are closely monitoring its progress.

In the event that the tropical storms forming in the Indian Seas evolve into cyclones, they will be named ‘Tej,’ following the naming convention used for cyclones in the Indian Ocean region.

The IMD has issued a heavy wind and fishermen warning for the Arabian Sea, considering cyclone genesis events in the following areas:

  • Lakshadweep Area on 19th & 20th October
  • Southeast Arabian Sea on 19th & 20th October
  • Eastcentral Arabian Sea from 19th to 22nd October
  • Westcentral Arabian Sea from 19th October onwards
  • Southwest Arabian Sea from 20th to 22nd October

However, there in no worming for the Northern Arabian sea in which the Gujarat coast fall so far. DeshGujarat
