14 dead as thunderstorm, dust storm hit parts of Gujarat

Ahmedabad: Fourteen people lost their lives across Gujarat, while 16 others were injured as unseasonal rain, accompanied by strong winds and dust storms, swept through parts of the state on Monday evening during what is typically the peak of summer.

As per the official figures from May 4th to 6th, 10 AM, most casualties were reported in Kheda, where two people died after trees fell on them, and two others lost their lives due to the collapse of a building and a makeshift roof. Three people died in Vadodara—two from electrocution and one after a hoarding fell on him.

Ahmedabad, Aravalli, and Dahod each reported two deaths. In Aravalli, both fatalities were caused by lightning strikes. In Dahod, the deaths occurred due to uprooted trees, while in Ahmedabad, one person died from a lightning strike and another due to a collapsed hoarding. One woman died in Anand after a wall collapsed on her.

Out of 16 people injured, 6 were from Panchmahal, while 3 each were injured in Kheda and Dahod. Four people were injured in Aravalli and Anand. Meanwhile, 25 animals were injured during this sudden weather event, and 7 houses collapsed in Panchmahal and Kheda.

The rain, hailstorm, and dust storms affected around 168 talukas across many districts of Gujarat, mainly in Saurashtra, Kutch, and parts of central Gujarat.

In Ahmedabad, a severe dust storm was followed by heavy rain in several parts of the city during the night. Strong winds led to the collapse of at least 46 trees in 75 reported incidents.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast more rain in the city on Tuesday. Wind speeds of 40–50 km/h caused widespread dust storms in many areas, significantly reducing visibility and toppling hoardings onto roads. DeshGujarat
