Stray dog takes away 1-year-old girl in Surat; search underway

Surat: In yet another incident of stray dog menace, late Tuesday night, a stray dog carried away a one-year-old girl from a construction site near Bansari Resort in Vav village, Kamrej taluka. Despite frantic efforts by her mother and local laborers to rescue the child, the infant remains missing as of today.

The victim, Maya, is the only daughter of Anjubhai and Titaben, a migrant laborer couple working at a construction site adjacent to the resort. Originally from Madhya Pradesh, Anjubhai had recently returned to their hometown for work, leaving Titaben and Maya in a temporary hut at the site with other laborers.

Around 10:00 PM, while Titaben was preparing dinner, she had laid Maya down beside her. In a shocking turn of events, a stray dog suddenly ran up and snatched the sleeping child right in front of her. Despite immediate screams and efforts to chase the dog, which fled into the surrounding fields, Maya could not be retrieved.

More than 100 workers from the area joined the chase, but the dog disappeared into the dark fields. With no trace of the infant, the Kamrej police were alerted. As hours passed without success, authorities escalated the search by deploying fire brigade teams and a dog squad on Wednesday morning.

So far, over 200 people—including police, fire officials, laborers, and local residents—have joined the search, combing through fields and nearby areas.

As of now, the child is still missing. The incident has once again raised serious concerns about stray animal threats in residential and labor-dense areas. DeshGujarat
