Gujarat govt imposes 180-day strike ban on essential civic services in Ahmedabad

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government has issued a notification imposing a 180-day prohibition on strikes by employees engaged in essential services under the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS), effective from July 12, 2025.

The move follows reports indicating that workers in key service categories, classified under Class I, II, and III of Chapter IV of Schedule-A of the Gujarat Provincial Municipal Corporations Act, 1949, may resort to a strike. Citing public safety and the uninterrupted functioning of vital services, the government has declared a state of emergency in Ahmedabad under Section 62 of the Act.

During the ban period, employees in the specified essential service categories are prohibited from withdrawing from duties—except in cases of illness or accident—or from neglecting or refusing to perform their duties. The directive aims to ensure the continuity of critical civic functions vital to the well-being of Ahmedabad’s residents. DeshGujarat
