Ahmedabad: The recent collapse of the Gambhira Bridge connecting Anand and Vadodara, which led to the loss of over 15 lives, has triggered a question among the public: how old and safe are the bridges we commute on? The city of Ahmedabad has several flyovers and bridges under the jurisdiction of the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC). Among these, the oldest bridge has been standing for over a century. The oldest among them is the Swami Vivekanand Bridge, also known as Ellis Bridge (old), built in 1892, followed by the Kalupur Railway Overbridge and Sardar Bridge, dating back to 1915 and 1940 respectively. Among the other old bridges, the Sarangpur Railway Bridge and the Amarsinh Chaudhary Railway Overbridge (Asarwa) were also built in 1940. In total, at least 7 bridges in Ahmedabad are more than 75 years old.
Meanwhile, eight bridges under the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) are over 25 years old. Among them, Nehru Bridge is the oldest, constructed in 1962. The other bridges that are more than 25 years old include Parikhshit Majmudar Bridge, Subhash Bridge, Babu Jagjivanram Railway Overbridge (Girdhar Nagar), Baba Saheb Ambedkar Railway Overbridge (Chamunda), Chimanbhai Patel Railway Overbridge, Kadila Railway Overbridge, and Nathalal Zaghda Railway Overbridge.
As per the official list by AMC, a total of 75 bridges fall under the jurisdiction of the AMC. DeshGujarat
