Ahmedabad civic body to conduct load-bearing tests on 3 bridges on Sabarmati River

Ahmedabad: Following the Gambhira bridge collapse, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has initiated a citywide inspection of flyovers and bridges that are 15 years old or more. As part of this effort, load-bearing tests will be conducted on three Sabarmati River bridges, including Nehru Bridge (built in 1962) and Gandhi Bridge (constructed in 1942).

Deputy Municipal Commissioner Mirant Parikh stated that the inspection will be carried out in two phases. “We will prioritize the three Sabarmati bridges in the first phase, while also instructing our technical team to examine 30 bridges built before 2010,” Parikh said. The rest of the city’s bridges will be reviewed in the second phase.

Parikh added that visual inspections are already underway on several bridges, with immediate repair work initiated wherever necessary. Last year, the AMC completed preliminary checks on 69 bridges. Based on those findings, repair work was initiated, with 80% already completed. Ongoing repair works include Gandhi Bridge, Sardar Bridge, Jivraj Park Bridge, and Chimanbhai Patel Bridge. DeshGujarat
