Ahmedabad Gets India’s First On-Route Solar Electric Charging Station for AMTS Buses
July 19, 2025
Ahmedabad: In a significant step towards sustainable urban mobility, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), in collaboration with Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited, has established the country’s first On-Route Solar Powered Electric Charging Station for electric buses at RTO Circle, the civic body announced today.
The project, part of Phase 2 of the “Capacity Building Project on Low Carbon and Climate Resilient City Development in India (CAPACITIES)”, is funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. The new facility is scheduled to be inaugurated on July 19, 2025, by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
According to AMC, the newly built charging station is equipped with two high-capacity chargers—one of 240 kilowatts and another of 180 kilowatts—and a 120-kilowatt solar power system.
As per the details, currently the civic body is incurring an extra cost of about Rs. 60 lakh annually to send 40 buses to the charging depot to recharge after completing their daily mileage.
However, with the implementation of the on-route solar-powered charging project, on-route charging will be possible for 40 to 45 buses every day. In addition, the 120-kilowatt (kWp) solar power system will generate about 1.2 lakh kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy every year and will help reduce carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) greenhouse gas emissions.
Due to this operation, AMC is expected to achieve annual financial savings of about Rs. 1 crore through the smooth operation of on-route charging for 40 to 45 buses.
AMC also plans to establish two more such solar-powered on-route charging stations in the city. DeshGujarat
