AMC plan to widen road connecting Old Vadaj to Naranpura Sports Complex

Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) will place before its standing committee on Thursday a proposal to widen the road connecting Old Vadaj Circle to the Naranpura Sports Complex via Kiran Park, Gai Circle, and Vijaynagar Crossing. The project aims to expand the stretch to 24.40 metres.

The widening will impact 242 properties, including 191 residential units, 24 commercial establishments, seven mixed-use structures, 13 religious sites, and a water tank. Among those affected is the Missionaries of Charity (Mother Teresa Ashram) in New Vadaj, which had opposed the plan citing its role in sheltering children. However, AMC rejected the plea.

In all, 150 notices were served to property owners, leading to 193 written objections. AMC officials said all objections were overruled. They added that legally recognized societies and properties will receive compensation, while displaced households will be provided alternative arrangements. A temple slated for demolition had requested relocation space, but AMC clarified that no such provision exists.

Authorities emphasized that the road widening is essential for enhancing connectivity to the Naranpura Sports Complex, being developed as part of the city’s long-term infrastructure upgrades, particularly in view of Ahmedabad’s past bid for the 2010 Commonwealth Games and its aspirations to host the 2036 Olympics.
