AMC to set up two dog hostels amid rising cases of dog bites

Ahmedabad: With the growing number of dog bite incidents in the city, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has decided to set up two hostels for pet dogs. The announcement comes just a day after two children were bitten by a German Shepherd at Sharanam Elegance, a residential complex in the New Maninagar area of the city. The incident occurred when a woman resident was walking her pet, and the dog suddenly broke free from her grip and attacked the children.

Announcing the decision, Standing Committee Chairman Devang Dani said, “With dog bite incidents increasing in the municipal limits, the civic body will set up two hostels for pet dogs—similar to those already functioning for stray cattle in Bakrol and Danilimda. Any pet dog involved in an attack will be kept in the hostel for 15 to 20 days and released only after it is deemed normal.”

Dani further stated that the AMC also plans to make immunoglobulin injections—which are essential in cases of severe dog bites—available at Urban Health Centres (UHCs), Community Health Centres (CHCs), and three major hospitals.

Notably, the civic body had earlier made it mandatory to register all pet dogs, but the implementation of this rule has been slow. While the registration drive continues, the recent German Shepherd attack in New Maninagar has once again underscored the need for stricter enforcement and timely action. DeshGujarat
