AMC allots temporary flats to Snehanjali Society residents after protest

Ahmedabad: A day after residents of Snehanjali Society in the Thaltej area staged a protest over demolition notices, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) arranged temporary accommodation for the affected families by allotting flats under a Gujarat Housing Board (GHB) scheme in Naranpura.

Following a meeting between AMC officials and society members, residents agreed to accept the interim housing arrangement. They also assured the authorities that they would abide by any decision taken by the AMC and GHB regarding rent payments or other financial issues. Around 25 families residing in the 35-year-old Snehanjali Society are facing displacement after the civic body declared the structures illegal following a court order.

The residents had protested on Monday by assembling at the society’s entrance. BJP councillor Samir Patel visited the site during the protest but was forced to leave after facing opposition from locals.

According to residents, the builder had constructed the society on a plot different from the one originally allotted and sold the houses to buyers. The issue later reached the Supreme Court after the original landowner filed a petition, resulting in the society being declared illegal. DeshGujarat
