Gujarat records nearly 10,000 MW solar power generation to support electricity demand
December 20, 2025
Gandhinagar: Gujarat recorded a major boost in power generation on Friday, with solar units producing a record 9,700 MW of electricity and supplying it to the Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) grid, providing significant relief to the state’s power supply system. Despite the strong solar output, the state had to procure 765 MW of electricity from the power exchange to meet evening peak-hour demand.
On Friday, Gujarat’s peak power demand touched 23,400 MW. To meet this requirement, the state sourced around 3,500 MW from government units under GSEC, 1,800 MW from wind power projects, 1,600 MW from Adani Group companies, and 1,000 MW from Essar Power among independent power producers. From the central sector, nearly 5,000 MW of electricity was supplied through NTPC units.
Notably, electricity supply from Coastal Gujarat Power Limited, a Tata Group company, has completely stopped since July 2025. Under the power purchase agreement (PPA), Gujarat is entitled to 1,805 MW from the company. Officials indicated that the deadlock with the company remains unresolved, resulting in the state continuously losing electricity worth crores of rupees. DeshGujarat
