150 tribals reconvert to Hinduism in ‘Ghar Wapsi’ event in Narmada district

Narmada: Around 150 tribal individuals who had earlier converted to Christianity have reconverted to Hinduism in a “Ghar Wapsi” event in Narmada district. Amid increasing reports and debates around religious conversion in Gujarat’s tribal belt, these individuals from Dediapada, Chikda and Sagbara areas have returned to Hinduism.
According to Hindu organisations, the individuals had earlier embraced Christianity after allegedly being “lured” or influenced by missionaries and pastors. A representation had previously been submitted to authorities alleging large-scale conversions in the region and warning of an agitation if the trend continued.
Rashtriya Adivasi Manch Gujarat secretary Sonji Vasava said many people had converted without full awareness and later felt they had been misled. “In Dediapada, Sagbara and Chikda talukas, conversions have been taking place for some time. Many tribals later realise they made a wrong decision. Through Rashtriya Adivasi Manch, Dharm Jagaran and Dharm Prasar groups, along with saints and local devotees, we counselled them. Accordingly, around 150 such people participated in the Ghar Wapsi programme on December 22 and returned to their original faith,” he said.
Political reactions have also emerged. MLA Chaitar Vasava said tribals traditionally identify as tribals first, though today they follow different religions.
Meanwhile, Narmada district collector said no formal complaint of forced religious conversion has been received so far. BJP MP Mansukh Vasava said tribals have historically been associated with Hindu traditions. DeshGujarat
