Ahmedabad civic body seals over 600 units of property tax defaulters

Ahmedabad: The East Zone tax department of the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC), in a crackdown against property tax defaulters, sealed 590 units over the past three days and recovered ₹1.79 crore in outstanding dues.

To improve compliance, the department sent WhatsApp reminders to around 4.10 lakh taxpayers, urging them to clear their pending property tax dues. Acting on the directions of the Deputy Municipal Commissioner (East Zone), officials carried out sealing operations across various wards against properties where taxes remained unpaid.

At the same time, to promote the ongoing interest waiver scheme, the AMC conducted awareness drives across eight election wards, Amraiwadi, Nikol, Bhaipura-Hatkeshwar, Vastral, Odhav, Gomtipur-Viratnagar and Ramol-Hathijan. As part of the campaign, around 35,000 pamphlets were distributed through rickshaw-based outreach.

Meanwhile, the Central Zone tax department also carried out a special sealing drive on Thursday, sealing 75 properties across different wards for failure to pay property tax. The action covered Krishna Complex and Karnavati Complex in the Ghee Kanta–Ratia Ward, Sumel Business Park-5 near Chamunda Bridge in Asarwa, Sumel Business Park-1 near the New Cloth Market, and properties located in the Gaikwad Haveli and APMC wards in Jamalpur.

Officials said the sealing drive would be intensified in the coming days and warned that continued default could invite stricter legal action, including public auction of properties, seizure, and filing of police complaints.

The AMC has urged taxpayers to take advantage of the property tax interest waiver scheme applicable to residential and non-residential properties from January 1 to March 31, 2026. The civic body also warned that stricter measures, including disconnection of water supply and drainage connections for high-default residential and non-residential societies, would be initiated if dues remain unpaid.
