Sabarkantha: Tension prevailed in Vijaynagar town following an alleged harassment and eve-teasing incident involving a young Hindu woman.
According to officials, the incident occurred during the Makar Sankranti festival when the woman was on the terrace of her house. A group of youths, reportedly from another community, allegedly passed obscene remarks and later intimidated the family by roaming near their residence on motorcycles.
The family has alleged that threats, including death threats, were issued, leading to public outrage and heightened tension in the locality. It was also stated that a similar molestation complaint had been filed around three months ago, but alleged inaction at the time may have emboldened the accused.
Considering the seriousness of the matter, leaders of Hindu organisations visited the victim’s family and extended their support. Amid mounting pressure and public anger, police registered an FIR against eight accused persons and initiated further investigation.
In view of the situation, additional police forces were deployed in the area, and patrolling was intensified to maintain law and order. A peace committee meeting was convened, during which citizens were urged to remain calm and cooperate with the authorities.
Local organisations also met the victim’s family and demanded strict action against the accused. The family has alleged that more individuals were involved in the incident and has sought stronger legal action, including the addition of rioting charges.
Police confirmed that the accused have been rounded up for questioning. Authorities said appropriate action would be taken strictly as per law and assured that security arrangements would remain in place until normalcy is fully restored. DeshGujarat
