AMC Okays ₹3 Crore Lighting Project for 27,000 Chalis; Oral Cancer Screening to Begin at 9 CHCs

Ahmedabad: The weekly Standing Committee meeting of the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) was held on Thursday, January 22, 2026, during which several key decisions related to urban development were discussed.

Briefing the media after the meeting, Standing Committee Chairman Devang Dani said that thousands of chalis located across AMC’s seven zones—particularly in the East, North and South zones—will soon receive improved street lighting facilities.

He stated that while the civic body has already provided RCC roads, paver blocks, water supply and drainage infrastructure in these areas, adequate lighting facilities were lacking. To address this issue, the Standing Committee has approved the installation of 9-metre-high light poles inside approximately 27,000 chalis, benefiting an estimated 2.5 to 3 lakh residents.

The project will be implemented at an estimated cost of ₹2.5 to ₹3 crore, and is expected to significantly improve safety and living conditions in these densely populated localities.

Early Cancer Detection Facilities Planned

Speaking about healthcare initiatives, Dani said that AMC-run hospitals, including SVP Hospital, LG Hospital and Shardaben Hospital, are strengthening cancer screening services.

At SVP Hospital, mammography is already being used to detect breast cancer at an early stage. He noted that cases of oral cancer are rising steadily, prompting the civic body to expand early detection efforts.

As part of the new plan, primary oral cancer screening facilities will be set up at nine Community Health Centres (CHCs) operated by AMC across all seven zones.

Under the proposed system, doctors will examine the inside of the mouth using a specialised camera. A green signal will indicate no signs of cancer, while a red signal will suggest the need for further investigation or biopsy.

Dani said the facility will be introduced in the near future with the aim of detecting cancer at the earliest stage and preventing its progression, especially among high-risk populations. DeshGujarat
