AMC to provide safety gear in every ward for emergency sanitation work
February 09, 2026
Ahmedabad: The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has approved a proposal to provide one complete set of safety gear in every municipal ward for use by the Emergency Response Sanitation Unit, in line with the provisions of the Manual Scavenging Act, 2013, and Swachh Bharat Mission guidelines.
The work has been awarded to Shri Venkatesh Safety Manufacturing Company, with a sanctioned cost of ₹1.39 crore.
According to civic officials, the safety equipment is intended for situations where desilting machinery cannot be used and emergency repair work requires personnel to enter machine holes or sewer lines. The initiative aims to ensure systematic emergency preparedness while prioritising the safety and health of sanitation workers and minimising the need for manual entry into hazardous spaces.
AMC stated that maintaining modern emergency safety equipment at the ward level is mandatory under national sanitation and safety norms. The move is expected to make sanitation operations safer, more organised, and compliant with legal provisions, while strengthening the city’s preparedness for any future emergency involving sewer or drainage infrastructure.
