AMC proposes Rs. 50 Crore Eco-Friendly Floating Solar Plant in FY 2026 Budget

Ahmedabad: In its final budget for FY 2026, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has announced a plan to install an eco-friendly floating solar project. Under this project, floating solar panels will be placed over open water bodies. Such solar panels will not have microplastics, and they shall be 100 percent recyclable. Such placement of panels will reduce water evaporation and also control the growth of algae. It will save the use of land for solar power generation. The AMC has planned a 10 MW solar plant and proposed an allocation of Rs. 50 crore for that.

In a move toward energy self-reliance, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has announced the implementation of eco-friendly floating solar projects on city lakes and the Sabarmati River. This initiative, part of the 2026–27 budget, marks the city’s first attempt at generating renewable energy on open water bodies rather than traditional land-based or rooftop installations.

A Major Investment in Clean Energy

The Standing Committee has allocated Rs. 50.00 crore for the first phase of this project. A primary focus of this plan is the installation of a 10 MW floating solar plant at Lambha Lake, which has been specifically selected because it consistently maintains its water levels.

Cutting-Edge Eco-Friendly Technology

The project aims to utilize unused water bodies to generate clean power while saving valuable urban land. To ensure environmental safety, the AMC plans to use specialized technology that features:

  • • Zero microplastics.
  • • 100% chemical-free floating solar PV systems.
  • • Environmental protection by reducing water evaporation and controlling the growth of algae, which helps maintain water quality.

Vision 2028: 100% Renewable Energy

This floating solar initiative is a critical component of the AMC’s broader “Sustainable and Adaptive” vision. The corporation has set an ambitious target to power 100% of municipal facilities with renewable energy by 2028.
Currently, the AMC is working toward a total 100 MW captive solar capacity, which, combined with wind power projects, is expected to result in a significant reduction of carbon emissions—estimated at 11.5 lakh tons of greenhouse gases by 2028–29. By adopting floating solar technology, Ahmedabad positions itself as a leader in innovative renewable energy solutions among Indian municipalities. DeshGujarat
