NGT Dismisses Pleas of 337 Morbi Ceramic Units in ₹122 Cr EDC Case
February 26, 2026
Ahmedabad: The National Green Tribunal (West Zone) has dismissed appeals by 337 ceramic units from Morbi and Wankaner against payment of ₹122.05 crore as Environmental Damage Compensation (EDC) for using banned coal gasifiers.
The ban was enforced by the Gujarat Pollution Control Board after the matter reached the Supreme Court of India, with units allowed to operate only after shifting to PNG. In 2024, a committee assessed total environmental damage at ₹122.05 crore, to be proportionately recovered from defaulting units.
In May 2025, the GPCB issued recovery orders to 606 units, of which 337 challenged the move, citing lack of show-cause notices and disputing the penalty calculation.
The NGT’s Pune bench upheld the compensation formula, apportioned by industry size, and found no infirmity in the orders, dismissing the appeals. DeshGujarat
