NHAI Carries Out Repairs on Surat – Bharuch Expressway After Road Damage Complaints

Surat: The new Ena (Surat)–Bharuch section of the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway has come under criticism after frequent incidents of tyre bursts and damage to the road surface were reported within two months of its opening. However, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has started repair work at multiple locations to address the issue.

It is learnt that cracks and gaps developed at several points on the cement concrete (CC) stretch between Kim and Bharuch, prompting NHAI officials to initiate urgent maintenance using the panel rectification method. The repair work is currently underway at different locations where the surface panels were found damaged.

Ground reports stated that the affected concrete panels are being cut out using machinery and replaced with new sections. This method, known as panel rectification, is commonly used on cement concrete highways to restore damaged portions quickly without shutting down the whole carriageway.

Due to the ongoing repairs, traffic movement on the expressway has been partially affected. On several stretches between Surat and Vadodara, only two of the four lanes are operational, while barricading has been placed at repair sites to ensure safety during the work.

NHAI sources said the repair work is being carried out on priority to ensure smooth and safe travel for motorists using the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway corridor.

What is Panel Rectification?

In cement concrete roads, the surface is built in large rectangular slabs known as panels. When cracks, potholes, or surface damage appear, the affected panel is cut out with machines and rebuilt instead of demolishing the entire road. This process is called panel rectification and is widely used for highway maintenance.

Tyre Burst Complaints Reported

Before the repair work began, several motorists travelling between Bharuch and Surat had reported tyre bursts, particularly during daytime travel. Drivers claimed that damaged joints and uneven surface patches were causing problems for vehicles, especially at high speeds.

With repair work now underway, officials expect the situation to improve once the damaged panels are fully replaced. DeshGujarat
