PM Narendrabhai gifts a wall hanging with Kutch embroidery to PM of Denmark

Gandhinagar: Prime Minister Narendrabhai Modi has gifted a Kutch embroidery piece from Gujarat to Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen during his Denmark visit.

During the present visit of three nations by Prime Minister Modi, this is for the third time that he has gifted art items from Gujarat. Earlier PM Modi gifted a Rogan painting from Gujarat to Queen Margrethe of Denmark. During his Germany visit, he had gifted Sedli table, a Parsi craft item from South Gujarat to German Chancellor.

It is very interesting to note that when the PM of Denmark Frederiksen was giving a tour of her residence to PM Modi in a special gesture a day ago, PM Modi spotted the Pattachitra painting of Odisha adorning her house. Modi had gifted this painting to her during her last visit to India.

The Kutch Embroidery is a handicraft and textile signature art tradition of the tribal community of Kutch District in Gujarat, India. This embroidery with its rich designs has made a notable contribution to the Indian embroidery traditions.

The embroidery, practiced normally by women is generally done on cotton fabric, in the form of a net using silk or cotton threads of myriad hues. Certain patterns are also crafted over silk and satin. The types of stitches adopted are “square chain, double buttonhole, pattern darning, running stitch, satin and straight stitches”. The signature effect of the colorful embroidery sparkles when small mirrors called ‘abhla’ are sewn over the geometrically shaped designs.

The Prime Minister had on earlier occasions also gifted Akik made items from Khambhat in Gujarat to foreign dignitaries including Russian President Putin. DeshGujarat
