Electrification of 3,445 kms broad gauge route completed in Gujarat; 77% of it done under Modi govt in Centre

Gandhinagar: The Indian Railways is actively pursuing the goal of achieving 100% electrification of its entire broad gauge network across India. In Gujarat, 3,445 route kilometers of electrification out of total of 5,017 km have been achieved as of November 2023. Over 77% (i.e., 2,660 route kilometers) of track in Gujarat have been electrified in only the past 9 years since the Narendra Modi government came into power at the center.

According to government data, only 785 route kilometers were electrified in Gujarat until April 1, 2014, in 66 years since independence. Today 3,445 kms electrification has been achieved. The electrification of 906 route kilometers took place in the span of around 1.5 years, considering that 65.64%, or 2,539 route kilometers, were electrified in Gujarat by April 1, 2022.

The average route kilometers being electrified per month since April 2022 is 48 km. Therefore, with only 417 route kilometers remaining to be electrified in Gujarat, it is likely to take around 9 months to achieve 100% electrification of the railway route in the state.

It is also noteworthy that Gujarat falls under Western Railways, which has a total broad gauge of 5,017 route kilometers, out of which 4,711 route kilometers, that is 94%, have been electrified as of November 1, 2023. Till 2014, only 1,607 route kilometers were electrified in the western railway network.
