Ahmedabad – Gandhinagar Metro train service from Sept 16, but 7 stations en-route to open later
September 13, 2024
Gandhinagar: After a long wait for the people of Gandhinagar, the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro Rail service will be launched on September 16. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off Metro train service, connecting Motera to Gandhinagar Sector 1, which will also link people with GIFT City. The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) has planned to start the commercial run of the metro the day after the launch; however, the seven metro stations between Motera and Gandhinagar will not be functional at present. The halts at these stations have been postponed due to the expected low number of passengers. Therefore, the Metro train will directly stop at the GNLU station after departing from the Motera Stadium station.
The metro will not halt at Koteshwar Road, Vishwakarma Engineering College, Tapovan Circle, Narmada Canal, Koba Circle, Juna Koba and Koba Village metro stations. While stations have been built at these locations, overhead power lines need to be moved at some stations. Additionally, it is estimated that these stations will not attract a sufficient number of passengers under current conditions, leading to the decision to keep them non-functional for now.
According to the map shared by the GMRC, for the Motera to Gandhinagar Sector 1 route, the Metro will stop at a total of eight stations: GNLU, PDEU, Gift City, Raysan, Randesan, Dholakuva Circle, and Infocity.
Even though the Motera to Gandhinagar Sector 1 route will be operational, citizens will have to wait around nine months to travel from Sector 1 to Mahatma Mandir, as it is still under construction. Civil work is currently ongoing on the route from Sector 1 to Mahatma Mandir. Traction, electrification, signaling, and the preparation of metro stations will commence after the completion of civil works. Therefore, this entire route is likely to be ready by June 2025.
