VMC displays photos of litterbugs on LED screens to expose offenders

Vadodara: In a bold step towards urban cleanliness, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) has launched a unique digital initiative targeting those who litter in public. Implemented under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Arun Mahesh Babu, the civic body has begun displaying photos of violators caught dumping waste on roads across LED screens installed at prominent locations in the city.
As part of the campaign, images of individuals throwing garbage in public and their vehicle numbers—captured via CCTV—are now being shown on 33 large LED screens installed at key junctions and roads in Vadodara. The idea is to invoke a sense of shame and social accountability, discouraging public littering through public exposure. Citizens say the move is working, as people now hesitate before throwing waste on the streets. Many believe this strategy will promote better behavior and help keep the city clean.
In the coming days, the civic body plans to install more screens and tighten rules against public littering. Within a month, nearly 200 individuals have been caught on camera violating cleanliness norms. These individuals have not only been publicly named but also fined. The Solid Waste Management Department of the VMC has taken up this campaign to improve the city’s sanitation levels.
Officials explained that the goal is to change public mindset by showing offenders on screens—making them feel socially accountable. Based on the principle that “shame is also a penalty,” the campaign emphasizes that punishment is not just financial but also social. This initiative is expected to lead to lasting behavioral change and serve as a deterrent to others. DeshGujarat
