Ahmedabad: The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) launched a major demolition drive to remove encroachments on Kamal Lake land near Kubernagar ITI Road in the Sardarnagar area. The operation, which began early in the morning, resulted in the demolition of around 150 illegal houses and structures in Baliyadev Nagar, leaving several families homeless.

The drive was conducted by the North Zone Estate Department under tight police security. Bulldozers were used to clear the encroachments around the lake as part of the civic body’s efforts to reclaim public land. Civic officials said the encroachers had been issued notices on three occasions over the past six months, including a final notice 21 days ago. However, as the illegal structures were not removed despite repeated warnings, the AMC proceeded with the demolition.
The large-scale operation created a tense atmosphere in the area, with women and children among the affected families expressing strong resentment. Several residents alleged that the demolitions were carried out without making alternative housing arrangements and demanded immediate rehabilitation and resettlement from the authorities.
