HM Amit Shah to inaugurate 27-km Western Trunk Line in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad: The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has completed the 27.3-km Western Trunk Sewer Line project, aimed at providing a long-term solution to sewage overflow and drain backflow issues in rapidly developing residential zones of the city. The project will be inaugurated on December 28 by Union Home Minister and Gandhinagar MP Amit Shah.

The large-scale drainage network is expected to benefit more than 15 lakh residents across Shela, Applewoods Township, South Bopal, Shantipura, Science City, Fatehwadi and adjoining areas, which have repeatedly faced incidents of drainage water entering homes during peak load conditions.

Developed at a cost of around ₹326 crore, the trunk pipeline corridor extends from Vaishnodevi Circle to Sanathal and further connects to the Sabarmati River, passing through Shilaj, Ambli, Applewoods and Shantipura. Of the total stretch, over 8.1 km has been executed through micro-tunnelling to minimize road-level disturbances.

The project has been implemented in four execution packages. Open-cut trenching was used between Vaishnodevi Circle–Khyati Circle and Vakil Bridge–Shantipura Circle (₹53.54 crore), while micro-tunnelling was deployed between Khyati Circle–Vakil Bridge (₹75.67 crore) and Shantipura Circle–Sanathal Circle (₹136.28 crore). The final stretch from Sanathal to Fatehwadi up to the Sabarmati River included a 2400-mm diameter trunk line laid through open excavation, costing ₹39.39 crore.

The network comprises pipeline diameters of 1200 mm, 1800 mm and 2400/2500 mm, with additional expenditure incurred for utility shifting at railway, power and canal crossings.

With the completion of this key urban infrastructure initiative, AMC expects a marked improvement in drainage capacity across western Ahmedabad and substantial relief from sewage overflow complaints in vulnerable localities. DeshGujarat
