Ahmedabad: As many as 1,72,576 students are currently enrolled in 453 municipal schools run by the Nagar Primary Education Committee under the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. These schools operate in Gujarati, Hindi, English and Urdu mediums and are supported by 4,586 teachers. In addition to academics, the schools conduct co-curricular and skill-based activities such as language development, STEM education, mathematics and science exhibitions, art, music, literature, oratory and sports.
An English language learning programme has been expanded to 353 schools, including 297 Gujarati-medium and 56 English-medium institutions. Implemented through the English Gurukul Institute, the initiative aims to strengthen students’ spoken and written English skills using a digital application. Following a successful pilot in 10 schools, the programme is rolled out across all eligible schools. At present, around 1,12,000 students learn English through story-based videos focusing on reading, writing and conversation, with teachers conducting one dedicated English lesson every week using a teacher-specific application.
A recent study by the English Gurukul Institute, conducted across municipal schools in Ahmedabad, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, highlights significant achievements of Ahmedabad’s school board. The report notes optimal utilisation of infrastructure through double-shift operations, while 85% of students and parents express satisfaction with cleanliness and the learning environment. It also states that 92% of municipal school students can prepare digital presentations through Future Class initiatives, compared to the national government-school average of 65%.
The findings further show a 15% improvement in overall student performance through data-based teaching using the G-School app, a 10% rise in attendance, and a 15% improvement in education quality due to regular monitoring. Nearly 80% of students regularly use robotics labs, leading to a 30% increase in participation in regional and national science competitions. The report concludes that the education model adopted by AMC-run schools aligns with the goals of the National Education Policy 2020, benefiting nearly 1.72 lakh students, particularly from poor and middle-class families.
