Six Railway Overbridges in Ahmedabad to undergo major repairs
February 09, 2026
Ahmedabad: Following the recent Gambhira bridge accident, bridges across the state underwent comprehensive inspection, including 78 bridges in Ahmedabad. The inspection identified minor repair needs in several bridges, while major interventions, particularly bearing replacement, were recommended for around 6 railway overbridges.
Acting on the findings, the civic body has approved a ₹63-crore tender for bearing replacement work on 6 railway overbridges, including Girdharnagar Bridge, Chamunda Bridge, Cadila Bridge, Nathalal Jagda Bridge, Chandlodia Bridge, and portions of Chiman Patel Bridge. The lowest bidder among the two tenders received has been selected to execute the project.
During the repair process, bridge spans will be lifted using hydraulic jacks to remove damaged bearings and install new ones. Traffic movement will largely continue, with temporary arrangements allowing light motor vehicles to pass, while heavy vehicles will be restricted during active work periods. Authorities said the bridges will not be fully closed.
Where shops or masonry structures exist beneath bridges, necessary dismantling will be carried out to facilitate lifting operations, after which the structures will be rebuilt as required. Minor repairs identified during inspections will also be completed alongside the bearing replacement work, the civic body said.
The new bearings carry a 15-year guarantee under the tender conditions, though manufacturers typically offer up to 25 years. Contractors will remain fully responsible for performance during the guarantee period, and comprehensive insurance equivalent to the project cost has been secured to cover any unforeseen incidents during execution.
