Rush of Customers at Cosmos Bank in Vadodara after Reported Locker Theft

Vadodara: Allegations of gold jewellery going missing from a locker at The Cosmos Co-operative Bank Ltd. branch on Waghodia Road have created concern among customers, prompting a rush to verify valuables. Nearly 1,500 locker holders inspected their lockers over the past two days, though no other losses have been reported so far.

The complaint was lodged by NRI Narendrabhai Shah, who stated that 35 tolas of gold ornaments were missing from his locker. Shah has been living in the United States since 2003 and had last visited India in 2024. He returned again in 2026 ahead of his daughter’s wedding and went to the bank to retrieve jewellery for the ceremony, when he discovered the ornaments were not in the locker.

The branch has a total of 2,750 lockers, of which 25 are vacant. Police asked the remaining 2,725 customers to check their lockers as a precaution. Around 1,500 account holders have already verified their lockers and confirmed their valuables are safe, raising questions about why only one locker was allegedly affected.

Bapod Police Inspector M.K. Gurjar said the lockers operate on a dual-key system, with one key held by the customer and the other kept in the custody of the bank manager, and the locker can be opened only when both keys are used together. Police are examining how access may have been obtained and are investigating all possible angles, including bank procedures and records. Authorities said a detailed investigation is underway and no additional complaints have been received. DeshGujarat
