Gujarat Govt Orders 24 Trainsets for Under-Construction Surat Metro Rail Project

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat Government has ordered 24 metro trainsets for the Surat Metro project, as construction of the city’s metro rail network continues at a rapid pace, according to an official press release. However, it has not been clarified when these trainsets will arrive in Gujarat.

The Kolkata-based Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd was awarded a ₹866 crore contract in 2023 to supply 24 metro trainsets for the under-construction Surat Metro project.

The press release stated that the 40.3-km-long Surat Metro network is currently under construction and progressing rapidly. Once operational, these 24 trainsets will help expand sustainable urban transport in the city, reduce traffic congestion, and provide improved travel facilities for residents.

The government said the metro projects are part of a broader plan to strengthen transport infrastructure across Gujarat. The state’s metro network currently spans about 108 km and is expected to expand to nearly 190 km in the coming years. Plans to extend metro services to cities such as Rajkot and Vadodara are also under consideration.

The new metro trains will feature driverless technology, automated braking, real-time monitoring, CCTV surveillance, fire-detection systems, and obstacle-detection technology, ensuring safe, efficient, and modern transport for passengers.

Officials said Gujarat continues to lead in transport infrastructure development, with projects such as the bullet train, the Dahod locomotive factory, and metro rail expansion contributing to the vision of a modern and self-reliant India. DeshGujarat
