Gujarat chalks out plan to check ingress of saline water

State government has decided to take concrete measures to check the ingress of saline water in the 1600 km long coastal areas spanning from Daman to Lakhpat. In Gujarat, the entire Saurashtra region is surrounded by the sea coast, South Gujarat has Arabian Sea.
Under a strategy, intensive measures are to be taken particularly in the coastal areas to recharge underground aquifers which will check salinity and push back the saline sea water.
tate government has formed a high level committee to implement water-management techniques and intensive steps for groundwater recharge on the priority basis. Rivers are connected to sea and influenced by tidal actions. Safety walls may be built at the confluence point to check salinity.
To check ingress of saline water and to hold rain water through water conservation measures are the key components of the strategy. NABARD has sanctioned aid for implementing salinity control programme. State has proposed ‘flood management programme related scheme’ under the 12th financial commission to undertake canal network expansion works and other water conservation steps.
