Areas dependent on Narmada canal water in Saurashtra’s three districts are facing water shortage due to breach in Narmada canal near Malvan in Surendranagar district. The 35-mt wide breach occurred due to overflow in the canal network, which itself was the result of clogging of the canal siphon with agricultural waste. The breach will be repaired within 10 days. Till then shortage of water will continue in three districts: Rajkot, Jamnagar and Kutch. Given below are highlights of seriousness of this issue:

-In Kutch, where there are no local sources, procedure of getting water through bore wells is going on and being discussed among local officials.

-Breach in Narmada canal will possibly be repaired within seven days. Then after water will be released from Dhanki, but it will reach Maliya canal only after 75 hours. This means the problem will continue for ten days.

-Rajkot needs 370 lakh gallon water every day, of which 60 lakh is supplied by Narmada canal. Rajkot has implemented zone wise cut in water supply. Impact of such restrictions can be seen in New Rajkot and Samakantha areas. Rajkot lifts water from Bhadar, Aaji, Nyari-1-2 dams and Randarada and Lalpari lakes. However in these last days of summer, none of the sources has enough water that can substitute shortage that has arised due to breach in Narmada canal.

-Jamnagar is facing 40% cut in water supply due to breach in Narmada canal. Jamnagar gets 55 lakh gallon water from Und, 30 lakh from Sasoi and 60 lakh from Ranjit Sagar dam.

-Whole Kutch district depends on Narmada water. Therefore Kutch is facing daily 17 crore liter shortage of water.

-Eight group water supply projects in Rajkot and Jamnagar districts are facing water shortage due to Narmada canal breach. Kotada, Ribada, Padadhari, Tankara, Dhrol, Khijadia, Lalpur are the areas affected. Kutch’s 10 group water distribution projects consisting 200 villages of Rapar, Mundra, Gurukrupa, Bhuj rural, Mandvi, Gadhshisha, Anjar and Vadava areas are facing water shortage due to breach in Narmada canal.
